Liepāja residents prove: our solidarity is stronger than Riga's public transport

Forty volunteers turned Liepāja into a detective movie on Saturday, searching for a missing senior.
On Saturday, a real social experiment took place in Liepāja that proved - in our city, people still know what compassion is. While in Riga, people wouldn't notice a missing person even if they stood by the Freedom Monument with a sign saying 'I am lost,' in Liepāja forty volunteers mobilized faster than firefighters responding to an alarm.
The search operation turned into a real detective story with all the elements - surveillance cameras, specially trained dogs, and even reflective vests. 'I thought some new reality show was being filmed,' says Jānis, a resident of Ganību Street. 'But then I realized - these are our people, simply helping.'
The dogs from 'Helper Latvia' turned out to be better detectives than Sherlock Holmes, leading searchers all the way to the North Pier. Meanwhile, in Karosta, local residents actively engaged in starting conversations with the volunteers, because, as everyone knows, Karosta residents are experts at striking up conversations with anyone who shows up there in a reflective vest.
Finally, after an intensive day's work, the search was called off with hope that the missing lady is alive and safe. Operational information was passed to police, but most importantly - Liepāja once again proved that we are a city where man is not wolf to man, but rather a helper. Try the same thing in Riga - there they'll first ask you about the hourly rate.
