Liepāja's Coughing Season Officially Opened: Three New Participants Registered for Tuberculosis Championship
While Riga is still wondering why people cough, Liepāja already knows - it's a local sport with 287 participants nationwide.
Liepāja Regional Hospital announces the new season - the tuberculosis championship, where three new participants have already signed up this year. While Riga is still debating whether coughing is a fashion accessory or a symptom of illness, ten patients are already actively training in our city.
Pulmonologist Mārcis Kristons reveals that at the beginning of the disease, participants usually complain of fatigue and mild coughing. "It's like St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Cathedral - at first it seems like just light ornaments, but during major holidays it turns out you need full equipment," explains the specialist, adding that a three-week cough is already a serious signal.
Liepāja's wind, of course, also contributes - tuberculosis bacteria can survive in the air for several hours, which is ideal for our climate. "We have separate rooms with separate entrances for tuberculosis patients. It's like a VIP zone, just with medical access," says hospital representative Indra Grāse.
Local pensioner Jānis Bērziņš comments: "While in Riga you pay for everything, here diagnostics and treatment are state-funded. You don't even need a referral - come and cough to your heart's content!" Global processes, of course, also affect the situation, but as always in Liepāja, we cope with everything - even with 4,400 people worldwide losing the battle against this disease daily.
