Liepāja is witnessing an unprecedented display of democracy - residents must vote on the future of a fallen tree. This time not for a mayor or another playground, but for what to do with Jūrmala Park's famous Canadian poplar, which has decided that standing upright is not its forte.

The municipal department offers three options: saw it up and throw it away (as usual), hope for a miracle (also as usual), or leave it lying as a "fallen log" (a new term in our vocabulary). "I think this tree simply got tired of our winters," philosophically remarks local pensioner Gunārs. "If I were a tree, I'd also lie down."
The most bizarre option is the third - leaving the tree lying as a "habitat for microorganisms." This means the park will now have natural hostel signage for fungi and insects. In Riga, such an experiment would be called "urban environment degradation," but for us it's "promoting biodiversity."
