Doll Revolution at Liepāja Museum: Tamāra Čudnovska Proves Barbie Is Nothing Compared to Imperial Russian Elegance

While Riga children play with plastic dolls from China, Liepāja unveils an exhibition about real ladies — porcelain and composite beauties who know how to behave in society.

Something locals are calling a 'doll parliament session' is taking place at the Liepāja 17th-19th Century Interior Museum. Tamāra Čudnovska's collection proves that before our era's Instagram models, the world was ruled by real ladies — porcelain dolls who know how to sit straight and never ask for selfies.

'These dolls are as elegant as the water in Liepāja Olympic Center's pool right after it's been changed,' says museum director Ieva Dzintare, examining late 19th-century boudoir dolls. 'While children in Riga learn from plastic Barbie how to look unrealistic, our dolls have been teaching how to be a real lady for centuries.'

Particularly impressive is said to be a doll from French company S.F.B.J., which, according to local visitors, looks as mysterious as Liepāja's winter weather forecast. Čudnovska herself has restored all the dolls, using authentic fabrics and so much patience that even fishermen admit — such precision is only needed for net weaving or doll restoration.

'While Riga museums make you look at dusty exhibits behind glass, we offer meetings with ladies who make you feel like a true gentleman,' laughs local pensioner Jānis. 'Just don't touch — they're worth more than my pension.' The exhibition can be viewed on the second floor of Mrs. Hoijere's guest house, where even the confectionery looks less sweet than these porcelain beauties.
