Liepāja Beach Ready to Welcome Unusual Guests - Fish Fleeing from Riga

Hydrologists warn of impending floods, but in Liepāja we're already preparing for warm baths right in the city center.

While Riga's hydrologists dramatically announce the coming spring floods, we Liepāja residents just smile and look at our already perfectly flooded streets. "What's new? We've had natural pools everywhere you turn for years," philosophically comments Karosta resident Valdis, who has been swimming to work for the second year now.

Riga experts frighten with yellow, orange and even red warning levels, but in our city the color codes are simpler: either you can walk on foot, or you need rubber boots. "Those Riga folks don't even know what real floods are," laughs market vendor Maija, "here every spring Grobiņa Street turns into Venice, only more beautiful."

Most interestingly, Kurzeme rivers are supposedly the first to start flooding. Of course! We've always been at the forefront - whether in rock music, trams, or now in floods too. While eastern Latvians are still thinking about how to deal with water, we've already figured out how to turn it into a tourist attraction.

"Actually, it's a great time for Riga tourists to finally see what a real seaside city looks like," says Edgar, owner of café "By the Sea," already planning a floating terrace. Meanwhile, the municipality quietly hopes that maybe this time the flooded potholes will finally become official ponds. Liepāja residents, of course, are already thinking how to use this situation to their advantage - if by chance some Riga resident gets stuck in the floods, they can offer rescue services at Riga prices.
