Liepāja Political Scientist Explains: When Fico and Orbán Will Find Karosta on the Map

While politicians in Riga are still trying to figure out where Ukraine is located, Karosta in Liepāja has known for 1,461 days straight that truth isn't what costs less.

Viktor Orbán and Robert Fico continue to act like those friends at a party who are still trying to convince everyone that their ex is their true love. Except this time the ex is Kremlin oil, and they're willing to do anything just to get back that sweet past. "I don't understand how someone can be so stubborn," says Guna from Liepāja Central Market. "Even my ex-husband figured out faster that I had a new phone number."

While these two gentlemen stubbornly look back to the East, our tram in Liepāja has long been moving forward. And it's not like we're short on oil – we simply know the difference between dependence and freedom. As one local rock musician said: "If you want to be free, don't sell yourself for money. If you want to be dependent, go to Hungary."

But the most unpleasant thing is that the EU can't agree on sanctions precisely when needed. It's like our city council meetings – everyone knows what needs to be done, but someone always finds a reason why we need to wait. Except this time it's not just Liepāja residents waiting for new streets, but all of Ukraine waiting for support.
