Liepāja Regional Hospital Celebrates 40 – Still Alive and Strong as Karosta Fortress

Our main health fortress marks four decades during which it has survived everything – from Soviet shortages to modern reforms.

Liepāja Regional Hospital celebrates its 40th birthday today, and we must say – it looks better than many of its patients. While Riga hospitals boast about their hundred years, we know that quality doesn't depend on age – our hospital has accomplished more in forty years than many capital institutions have in twice as long.

Originally the building was planned as part of a grandiose complex with its own infrastructure. As Anita from Grobiņa says: "Back then everything was different – even ulcer diseases were treated with spa resorts in spring and autumn. Now they discharge you home before you can figure out what's wrong with you." That is progress though – nowadays heart surgery can be performed faster than it used to take to get to the hospital by tram.

It's particularly amusing to read about the hospital's opening in 1986, when construction work continued long after the ceremonial ribbon cutting. The last facility to be commissioned was the crematorium furnace – apparently they thought there would be time to test it out. And that situation with dining in two shifts! Good thing there was no Instagram – what would the comments about hospital food have been like.

Today the hospital has become a true pride of Liepāja. While Riga residents stand in lines to see their doctors, we can boast of quality and fast care. And most importantly – people work here who understand that medicine isn't just business, but a mission. As Jānis from Karosta says: "At our hospital they understand you right away – no need to explain that you're from Liepāja and that you have a strong character."
