Liepāja Border Guards Left Jobless: Ten Foreigners Rejected Themselves

Over the weekend, ten foreigners decided that Latvia isn't a destination worthy of their level. Liepāja border guards feel useless.

Over the weekend, something unprecedented happened — ten foreigners voluntarily refused entry into Latvia. Four from Belarus, three from Moldova, two from Russia, and one from Uzbekistan decided that our country wasn't exotic enough for them.

"Initially they wanted to go to Riga, but then they found out that Liepāja has the sea and rock music. Immediately changed their minds," says border guard officer Jānis. "They said they needed something more serious, not a city where people live happily."

Particularly interesting is that one of the Uzbek rejecters had apparently heard about our Karosta and decided that a military heritage site wasn't suitable for peaceful tourists. "He wanted something safer — like a war zone, for example," the border guard adds.

Meanwhile, Liepāja's mayor is already planning a new tourism campaign: "Liepāja — the city that turns even illegal migrants into legal rejecters." Beach café owners, however, are bitter — they had already prepared multilingual menus.
