Liepāja Schools Search for Principals, but Candidates Flee Faster Than Tourists from Karosta Prison
Competitions for principal positions at two Liepāja schools have ended without results - candidates either refuse or vanish like fog over Liepāja Lake.
Real principal hunting has unfolded at Līvupe Elementary School-Development Center and Karosta Music School, which so far has been as unsuccessful as trying to find a bus in Liepāja on Saturday evening.
Līvupe Elementary School principal Sarmīte Sidorova left her position of her own accord, which sounds as mysterious as why tourists always look terrified after visiting Karosta Prison. Two candidates initially applied for the competition for this position, but one of them later declined. As school employee Ruta says: "Maybe he read the job description and realized he'd have to work with children, not just documents."
The situation at Karosta Music School is slightly better — at least one candidate hasn't fled yet. Former principal Aiga Tiltiņa has retired, leaving behind only piano sounds and the question — who will now teach children to play instruments between Karosta's wind gusts. Additional documentation has been requested from one candidate, which in Liepāja means the process will drag on longer than road repairs on Graudu Street.
Meanwhile, deputy principals have been appointed as acting heads at both schools, who are now thinking: "Did I really agree to this?" But as old Karosta aunt Marija says: "At least they don't have to lead prison tours — there's already enough screaming there."
If the situation doesn't improve, even Riga principals might apply in the next competition — they've already proven they can survive anywhere.
