Liepāja Students Prove That Wind Energy Is the Only Field Where Our City Isn't a Leader

While Riga students are still learning to properly pronounce the word 'wind,' on March 28th, Liepāja State Gymnasium hosted a regional debate tournament on wind energy's environmental impact. 66 participants from all over Kurzeme arrived to prove that if there's anywhere to argue about wind, it's in Liepāja, where this force of nature is as unpredictable as market prices, where everything is fresher than in Riga and half as expensive.

The tournament was won by a Ventspils team, which caused mild surprise - usually Ventspils residents only complain about wind, rather than defend it. Liepāja's Oskars Kalpaks Secondary School triumphed in the English language group, proving that our students can talk about wind even in a foreign language. 'We knew we'd win because we walk to school against the wind every day,' commented one participant while trying to free their hair from their face.

During the debates, students analyzed the positive and negative aspects of wind energy. The positive arguments were about energy independence and jobs, while the negative ones focused on environmental impact. Meanwhile, outside, Liepāja's wind personally demonstrated its position by blowing away several advertising posters and proving it's against any form of control.

After the tournament, the best teams will head to the national tournament in Riga, where they'll have to explain to the capital's students what wind actually is and why it can't just come from air conditioning. As one of the organizers noted: 'Seeing these young people's erudition, it's clear - they understand wind better than Riga city planners understand traffic organization.'
