Liepāja Students Win Book Contest - Riga Searches for Excuses Why Their Kids Only Write About Money

Six Liepāja residents awarded prizes in a contest about Latvia's first published book, while the capital is still trying to figure out what a book is.

While Riga children learn to write with keyboards and think a book is something like an Instagram story, Liepāja students prove that culture here grows like salt in sea air - slowly, but with quality.

The concept of Latvia's first book from 1525 was apparently too complex for Riga students, so among more than 1000 participants, Liepāja once again proved superior. Kate Kolosova, Ērika Gaiķe, Kārlis Gotlibs, Līva Meniķe, Amēlija Jansone and Marta Briķe - all these names will now have to be memorized in the capital to understand what truly talented students look like.

"We simply wrote about books, not about how much they cost or where to sell them," explains one of the laureates. "Apparently that's what the jury was looking for."

A representative from Riga's Education Department declined to comment, but it was unofficially learned that they're already planning a seminar called "How to Teach Children to Read Without Internet Help." In Liepāja they just smiled about this - here books are read before the internet bill gets paid.
