Liepāja Hospital: Ice season over, back to treating regular accidents

After a week when Liepāja Regional Hospital operated like an Olympic skating rink with medical care, doctors can finally return to treating ordinary mishaps.

Liepāja Regional Hospital announces it can finally return to its usual work — treating ordinary carelessness and clumsiness, not just ice-related trauma. The past week at the hospital resembled more of an Olympics than a medical facility.

From February 20-26, the hospital received over 230 patients, most with a diagnosis of "ice plus inattention." As local nurse Gundega admits: "It felt like we were working at the bottom of a ski slope. Every day brought new acrobats with surprised expressions."

Hospital representative Indra Grase notes that approximately ten surgeries had to be postponed. "The traumatic thaw turned out to be much more in demand than expected," she comments. "But now that the ice is gone, we hope to return to regular Liepāja traumas — tripping on tram steps and misjudging beach sand."

For comparison — in Riga, in such situations they simply close all streets and wait for spring. But we Liepāja residents keep working. Albeit with casts and bandaged heads.
