Liepāja Theatre Legend Ilga Martinsone Embarks on Her Eternal Tour

After 50 years on the Liepāja Theatre stage, actress Ilga Martinsone has begun her starring role in heaven, where the repertoire is definitely much better than in Riga.

Liepāja's cultural life mourns today — actress and speech coach Ilga Martinsone has departed for eternity, having proven that true love for theatre lasts longer than a hockey game at Liepāja's ice hall — namely, a full 50-year season.

Martinsone moved from Riga to Liepāja in 1957 at the invitation of chief director Nikolajs Mūrnieks and, as she later said in interviews, "never whined about this decision." Of course she didn't whine — who would complain when you can move from the capital's noise to a place where the wind is as dramatic as the theatre performances.

After retiring from theatre, Ilga became a member of the folklore group "Atštaukas," showing that retirement can be just as active as before it. As one local tells it: "Ilga was the type who could teach proper diction even after she had sampled Liepāja's traditional drink — hot tea with honey schnapps."

In recent years, health prevented the actress from visiting the theatre more often, but she remained faithful to her "Atštaukas" until the very end. Liepāja Theatre expresses condolences to all loved ones, and surely in heaven too Ilga will continue teaching proper speech culture — because up there they also need good diction so the angels understand what she's talking about.
