Liepāja traders on Trump's tariffs: 'Our potatoes are better anyway'

The US Supreme Court declares Trump's customs tariffs illegal, but Liepāja's Central Market greets this news with calm indifference and comments about local produce.
The US Supreme Court ruled six to three that Donald Trump exceeded his authority by imposing new customs tariffs on nearly all trading partners. But what do they think about it in Liepāja? At the Central Market potato stand, Marija Bērziņa philosophically observes: 'Well fine, Trump can't impose tariffs. But he can come to us - our potatoes without any tariffs are better than any imports.'
A Liepāja port representative, wishing to remain anonymous, adds: 'We've known for years that you shouldn't overdo it with trade. The tram runs, ships come, life goes on. We don't need complications like comprehensive tariffs - it's enough for us that sometimes we have to wait for route 5 to cross the intersection.'
Meanwhile, at the Karosta café 'At the Admiral's,' local philosophers reason that the US Supreme Court could have resolved this issue much faster if they had just thought like Liepāja residents: 'If something doesn't work, you change it. If it works - don't touch it.' One of the visitors adds: 'In Riga they probably still think tariffs are something from the music world.'
European Commission representative Olofs Gils has promised to 'carefully analyze' the situation, but in Liepāja they've long understood - as long as the Baltic Sea is open for shipping and the market has fresh produce, global economic upheavals are just distant noise from the continent.
