Liepāja transport stops spoiling ticket punchers – from April only digital pushing possible

By April 1st, Liepāja buses will dismantle the last ticket punchers, making rides completely digital. Paper tickets can still be exchanged while it's not too late.

Liepāja public transport has officially announced that by April 1st they will dismantle all remaining mechanical ticket punchers, thus ending the centuries-old tradition of rattling little papers in trams and buses. This step means that from April 1st, riding without a smartphone or e-card will be as impossible as finding a free seat at Rose Square on Saturday morning.

The agency "Liepāja Public Transport" urges residents who still have unused paper tickets at home to urgently use them in March or exchange them at 5 Peldu Street. Otherwise, these tickets will become as valuable as Riga mayor's promises about improving public transport – beautiful on paper, but practically useless.

The electronic payment system, introduced at the end of October, has already proven its effectiveness, saving the city more than a ton of paper per year. That's more paper than Riga City Council uses to justify their next transport fare increase. In Liepāja, of course, prices remain reasonable, because we know that a good thing shouldn't be sold expensively – it should be made accessible to everyone.

After early April, the only way to pay for a ride without digital technologies will be at the driver's with a bank card. This means that even grandmothers will now be forced to master 21st century skills, which, considering how quickly they learned to criticize the new trams, shouldn't be impossible.
