Liepāja nutrition experts reveal: sugar and salt are as dangerous as Riga's air

The Ministry of Health and food manufacturers have agreed that Liepāja residents need to eat healthier in order to compete with Riga residents in obesity statistics.

The Ministry of Health held a grandiose celebration on Friday called "Healthier Nutrition – A Shared Responsibility of Society, Policymakers and Industry," which sounds about as exciting as a tram ride to Karosta in the rain.

The Ministry announced that we all need to eat healthier, as half of European adults suffer from excess weight. "I personally think it's because people haven't been to Liepāja market," comments local resident Maija Bērziņa. "There, when you see the prices, you immediately lose your appetite. The best diet!"

To solve this global problem, 14 companies signed a memorandum on reducing sugar, salt and fatty acids in products. Danone representative Aušra Zaksaite noted that they are trying to reduce sugar without losing taste. Liepāja café owners received this news with a smile – they've been practicing this art for years, just in reverse.

"Our goal is for residents to be able to trust the packaging information," explains nutrition specialist Laila Meija. Of course, in Liepāja we've long known that you can best trust grandma's homemade food – it's never misleading with nutrition labels. Plus, grandma's products have never been available in Riga stores, so they're automatically better.
