Liepāja State Gymnasium introduces entrance exams - now even students must prove they are smart

Liepaja's most prestigious educational institution has decided that the five-grade threshold is not enough - now children will have to be tested with real exams.

Liepāja State Gymnasium has decided to follow in the footsteps of Riga schools and introduce entrance exams for 7th grade. Principal Helvijs Valcis announced that regular grades will no longer suffice - children will have to prove their knowledge practically as well.

"We've been too soft until now," admits Valcis. "But now that Riga has been examining children like adults for years, we too must adapt." Of course, everything is more complicated in the capital - they even make joint exams there. But in Liepāja we do everything differently and better.

The entrance tests will cover Latvian language and mathematics. The local mothers' group "Karostas Princesses" has already started discussing on social media whether mathematics will require calculating how many students a tram can carry. "My Jānis already knows that tram No. 5 runs every 12 minutes, that's mathematics," says one of the mothers.

Parents have not yet expressed concern, as one father said: "If our child can survive a Liepāja winter and tram queues, then they'll survive the exam too." Moreover, Center Elementary School teachers have already been informed about the changes, so children will be prepared like real warriors.

Maybe this is good - finally our students too can be proud that they didn't just get into gymnasium "through connections," but actually know something. Even if it's just that Liepāja is better than Riga.
