Liepājas Vēstules Awakens from Winter Sleep — Even Karosta Prison Ghosts Start Reading

The 65th issue of the magazine proves that Liepāja has so many stories that even prison visitors forget to be scared. Riga's residents still think we only have wind and a pier.
Liepāja's cultural life has once again proven that we can not only survive winter storms, but also create something that Riga calls 'provincial charm,' but which is actually real quality. The 65th issue of 'Liepājas Vēstules' has been released, and even Karosta prison tour groups are now reading the magazine, forgetting to be afraid of ghosts.
Artists Ieva Rubeze and Ieva Epnere, together with researchers, have compiled stories about the 'We for Liepāja' campaign that awakened Liepāja residents to free thinking thirty years ago. As a local cultural worker said: 'Back then we thought we were awakening the city, but it turns out we awakened all of Latvia. Riga is still trying to reach our level.'
The magazine has stories about everything — from 1929 motorcyclists who rode to Egypt, to modern entrepreneurs. Hockey coach Aleksandrs Cicurskis, at eighty years old, still has it out for Emīls Dreiblats, which proves that in Liepāja age is just a number, but character remains eternal.
The best part is that the magazine comes out on the eve of the city's birthday. While Riga celebrates with expensive concerts, in Liepāja we celebrate with quality stories and Baltic Sea wind that blows away all unnecessary thoughts. And if anyone thinks a provincial magazine can't be interesting, let them try surviving a Liepāja winter — then they'll understand that we have something to tell.
