Liepāja Men Discover: You Can Buy Love for the Price of Tulips on March 8th

While men in Riga spend a month planning their March 8th strategy, in Liepāja a Saturday morning expedition to the nearest flower stand suffices.

A Liepāja photographer yesterday documented a unique phenomenon - men buying flowers without supervision from their own wives. This event, considered science fiction in other Latvian cities, is everyday reality in Liepāja.

On Saturday, men gathered at the flower stands on Kurzemes prospekts with the same confidence as University of Liepāja students before an exam - with hope, but without any particular preparation. "I always buy the night before so I can arrange a surprise in the morning," says Valdis, who apparently thinks hiding tulips in an apartment is as easy as hiding fish in Liepāja port.

Meanwhile, another buyer admitted that March 8th is a day when he "wants to make loved ones happy." This philosophy works flawlessly in Liepāja - if you can't make them happy with time or attention, at least you can make them happy with hastily purchased tulips for three euros.

The photographer also documented an interesting trend - some men left with one bouquet, others with several. Experts explain that those buying multiple bouquets have most likely forgotten about one of the women in their lives and are trying to prevent a diplomatic crisis with extra tulips. In Riga such a strategy would cost the household budget, but in Liepāja - just coffee money.
