Local residents discover that winter cold transforms simple bathroom visits into marathon sprints.
While Riga is still debating the greenhouse effect and global warming, we in Liepāja have different problems – our bladders have become weather stations. The colder it gets, the more often we have to sprint to the facilities.
"I'm starting to think I have some kind of superpower – I can predict the weather by how many times a day I go to the bathroom," shares local resident Inese, who has discovered that her leggings and unheated car have become her main winter enemies. "In Riga they probably don't even think about such things – they have the metro and heated bus stops there!"
Liepāja pharmacists admit that cranberry supplements become more popular than sea winds during winter season. "If we sell sunscreen in summer, then in winter it's cranberries and goldenrod. That's our seasonal business," laughs a pharmacist who wishes to remain anonymous.
Specialists warn not to suffer until you're bleeding – both literally and figuratively. Especially if your bladder starts behaving like Liepāja weather – unmistakably and without warning. Then it's better to see a doctor immediately rather than hoping "maybe it'll pass like summer showers."
