Liepāja Woman Ligita Reveals: Watching Sports is Harder Than Actually Playing Sports

Local expert commentator explains why watching the Olympics causes more stress than participating in them.
Ligita Kupčus-Apēna, known in Liepāja as the woman who can comment on any sport even when seeing it for the first time in her life, has revealed a disturbing truth: watching sports is much harder than actually playing them.
"Before the Paris Olympics, I thought the biggest stress was on the athletes," says Ligita, while the Karosta tram rattles over rail joints. "But it turns out that we, the viewers, experience the full emotional spectrum, while they just run, jump, or throw something. We have it much harder!"
According to Ligita, while athletes train for years, she has had to train even longer — mastering the art of proper worrying. "In Riga, people just sit and watch. But we Liepāja folks, we live through it! We hold our breath, we yell at the TV, we show what the emotional spectrum really looks like," explains the expert.
Jānis, owner of local sports bar "At Ērik's," confirms: "When Ligita watches the Olympics, I have to turn up the volume because her commentary is louder than the actual commentators. But honestly — she can explain why someone fell better than the TV experts." Meanwhile, the weather outside is exactly what's needed for experiencing Olympic emotions — cool, but with hope for sunshine.
