Liepāja Granny Predicted Everything in 2001: Even Karosta Won't Be Safe If War Starts

Local resident reveals that her grandmother knew 23 years ago - if war breaks out, even our Karosta won't be peaceful.

When buildings were knocked down in two American cities in 2001, Liepāja grannies immediately understood - this is just the beginning. While Riga was still wondering whether this was a real terrorist attack or just very unsuccessful construction work, our wise grannies already knew: war is coming.

Liene Kupiča remembers her granny saying at the time: "If this becomes a reason for war, we'll all experience it." And indeed - now, when what's happening in Ukraine is happening, it turns out Liepāja granny was right. As always, by the way. Our grannies are like local Oracles - they predict everything: when it will rain, when the neighbor will sell their house, and world wars.

But the most ridiculous thing is that while little Liene couldn't sleep from worrying about war, her granny had already figured out a plan. "Just let there be no war, just let them not try to drive us away from home again," she had said. Because what could be worse than being driven away from Liepāja? Even war isn't as terrible as the thought of having to live, say, in Jelgava.

Now, when Liene has grown up and become a true Liepāja resident herself, she understands - granny's concerns were justified. Because if unrest starts somewhere in the world, sooner or later it will affect us too. But at least we have Karosta - if anything happens, all the military buildings are ready there. And the tram runs too - good for evacuation.
