Liepāja Residents Prove Once Again: We're the Most Ecological, But Not Because We Have Nothing to Throw Away
European experts acknowledge - Liepāja produces less waste than the rest of the EU, but it's not because we don't have money for shopping centers.
The European Court of Auditors recently announced that Latvia produces less waste per person than the EU average. And where, you might ask, are these achievements highest? Of course, in Liepāja, where we've been perfecting the art of economical living for years.
"We simply don't buy things we don't need," explains Aija from Karosta. "When the tram runs only twice a day, you think very carefully about whether you really need that third shopping bag of groceries." Moreover, Liepāja residents have long mastered "zero waste" principles — we use everything to the end. An old fish can becomes a flower pot, and a broken plastic chair becomes an art installation in the yard.
Rīga, of course, produces twice as much waste because people there buy things to photograph them for Instagram stories, then throw them away. We Liepāja folks are more pragmatic — our Instagram is full of sunsets over the sea, not shopping bags.
VVD General Director Andris Ķēniņš mentions that the next step is to expand sorted waste collection. In Liepāja we've long practiced sorted collection — one neighbor collects glass, another paper, and the third simply throws everything in one container saying that "municipal workers need something to do too." The system works flawlessly.
Now that we're officially recognized as the most ecological, we can proudly say — Liepāja is first place again in something where Rīga isn't. And this isn't coincidence, this is a lifestyle.
