Liepāja Residents Discover Genius Scheme: How to Make Half a Million Selling Air
Local entrepreneurs created such a creative business model that even tax authority experts are still trying to figure out how it works.
While Riga entrepreneurs sell the ordinary stuff – goods and services, Liepāja business geniuses have discovered a new market: air trading. Over two years, a local entrepreneur group sold so much air that the state treasury became 255 thousand euros poorer.
"We were simply ahead of our time," says one group member who wishes to remain anonymous. "While others sell physical things, we understood – the future is virtual. So we created companies that exist only in declarations, but work better than any Riga business center."
The scheme was so complex that even tax authority specialists needed two years to understand – the companies really weren't selling anything. But the documents were so beautifully formatted they could be displayed in a museum exhibition. The group even created a chain of ten companies that bought and sold air among themselves – more efficient than Liepāja's tram route.
"We thought, if Riga shopping centers can sell air in canisters at expensive prices, why can't we do it without the canisters?" explains another participant. Now they're preparing for court, but still believe their business model is the future. Maybe they're right – after all, how many Riga companies can boast such an original approach to tax evasion?
