Liepāja Residents Discover: Coffee Machine is Better Than Riga's Central Heating

While Riga residents are still trying to figure out why their coffee tastes like diesel fuel and dream of cheaper apartments, Liepāja has long solved the question of the perfect morning beverage. Local coffee enthusiasts have discovered that a properly chosen machine can bring more joy than a tram ride through Karosta.

A recent study conducted by the Liepāja Institute of Coffee Sciences (which is actually Aivar's café on Graudu Street) revealed surprising facts. It turns out that automatic coffee machines are the only technology capable of operating stably even when it's only blowing 15 meters per second outside — practically helpless weather by Liepāja standards.

"I bought one of those DeLonghi machines, and now I don't have to fight with a Turkish pot anymore," says local resident Maija, who lives near the port. "The coffee turns out as strong as our beach sand during storms, but without that feeling of having a mouth full of stones." An expert adds that capsule machines are especially suitable for those who love simplicity — just like our city planning, where everything is straight and without unnecessary curves.

The most interesting discovery — manual espresso machines work better in Liepāja than elsewhere because locals are already used to having to press everything with force. "When you fight with doors that won't open from wind pressure every day, then frothing milk seems like child's play," laughs Jānis, owner of café "Blow, Little Winds." Meanwhile in Riga, people are still trying to understand why their coffee is as expensive as an apartment in Torņakalns, but tastes like asphalt.
