Liepāja Residents Will Soon Be Able to Waste City Money on Their Crazy Ideas

The participatory budget is open again - time to dream about sand sculptures and tramway lines to Karosta.

Liepāja City Council has announced that until April 2nd, residents can submit their projects for the participatory budget, which has been allocated 257,260 euros this year. That's almost as much as one coffee costs in Riga!

Consultations will provide information about idea submission requirements and practical advice. "I'm already ready with my idea - to erect a monument to all Liepāja residents who have survived a tram ride without getting beaten up," says local enthusiast Kārlis. "It would be the first such monument in the world!"

The council encourages being creative but realistic. Therefore, ideas about a second Karosta or a private beach for every resident probably won't be feasible. However, the "Liepāja Soundscape" project - speakers throughout the city playing rock music 24/7 - could be exactly what's needed.

Resident Māra is already thinking about a more practical solution: "Maybe finally someone could put a roof over the market? So it doesn't rain on me when I'm buying cottage cheese." Of course, she doesn't know that rain in Liepāja is part of the local culture.
