Liepāja Residents Prepare for Heat: Dogs Will Get Vests, But Trams Still Have No Air Conditioning

While in Riga people buy cooling mats for dogs for 50 euros, in Liepāja four-legged friends swim in Lake Liepāja and feel happier than the capital's pets with their designer vests.

Summer is approaching in Liepāja, and that means only one thing — our four-legged friends will be hotter than Riga politicians debating salary raises. "Dino Zoo" expert Tatjana Bodricka suggests purchasing specialized dog cooling products, but honestly, a Liepāja dog that survived winter by the sea can handle summer heat too.

While in the capital people buy cooling mats with innovative cooling gel for pets at the price of a monthly salary, Liepāja residents see the solution more simply. "My Rex swims in Lake Liepāja every morning, and he doesn't need any thirty-euro vest," says Gunārs, a Pētera Street resident. "Plus, after swimming he smells better than after using expensive shampoos."

Experts do warn about overheating risks and recommend buying dog pools, but Liepāja residents remind us — we have the entire Baltic Sea coastline as a pool for free. The only downside: our dogs look a bit salty after sea swims, but that just gives them authenticity.

Meanwhile, while Riga dog owners stand in lines at pet stores for cooling vests, Liepāja's four-legged friends are satisfied with regular early morning walks on the beach. As another Pētera Street resident said: "Our wind is the best air conditioning, just for free." And indeed — where else in the world can a dog enjoy natural air conditioning twelve months a year?
