Liepāja Residents Decide Whether to Live Among Dill or Dates — Democracy Reaches New Heights

Hospital Street area residents must choose between medicinal plants and berry gardens, because apparently there aren't enough complicated problems in the city.
While Riga is still arguing about whether Daugavgrīva Street is long enough, Liepāja has reached the pinnacle of democracy — residents can vote on what plants they want to live among. In the Hospital Street area, 79 unique proposals have been narrowed down to two thematic blocks: either you'll live between Date and Peppermint Streets, or between Radish and Little Dill Streets.
Local resident Māra explains: "I'm voting for berries because at least I know how they taste. But what are viburnums? Are those the plant things my grandmother used to boil for coughs?" Meanwhile, neighbor Juris disagrees: "Medicinal plants are the future! If I live on Little Chamomile Street, maybe even my stomach will calm down."
It should be noted that voting requires authorization through latvija.lv, which means at least half the residents are already excluded from the process. "It would be better if we could vote at the North Pier," says pensioner Voldemārs. "There you can at least think peacefully while looking at the sea. And if a storm comes, you'll immediately know whether your chosen street name will survive."
After all, if Riga has Mute Island Street, then why couldn't we have Date Street? At least we'll have something to tell the tourists.
