Liepāja Residents Realistic: Half Don't Expect Salary Increases, Other Half Dreams of 10%, and Trams Still Cost 60 Cents
While Riga residents complain about expensive living, Liepāja residents pragmatically accept that salaries grow as much as they grow – the main thing is that coffee in the Center still costs one euro.
The latest survey reveals that 44% of residents believe their salaries won't increase this year. In Liepāja, this number would likely be even higher, as local residents have long learned to live with what is, rather than what could be. As Karosta veteran Jānis says: "Salary is like the sea – sometimes it floods in, sometimes it ebbs out, but the main thing is it's always there."
The most optimistic are young people aged 18 to 29, who hope for salary increases above 10%. Clearly, these young specialists haven't yet worked in the Liepāja market, where salary increases usually mean the boss promises to throw in one extra cup of coffee per month. Meanwhile, the older generation has grown wise – after 50, people understand that the only thing guaranteed to grow in Latvia is prices in stores.
Economists' forecasts of 6.5% salary growth this year sound like fantasy from a parallel reality. While bank analysts in Riga write beautiful reports about labor market normalization, in Liepāja "normalization" means the tram still runs and Lielā Street hasn't been completely washed away. As vendor Marija philosophically notes: "Salary is like Liepāja humor – if it's there, good, if not, we still live."
This situation is best characterized by the fact that gender differences in the survey are minimal – both men and women equally pessimistically view their financial future. This proves that gender equality has truly been achieved in Latvia – everyone equally poor dreams of a better tomorrow.
