Liepāja Residents Prepare Clothing Reserves for Winter Front - Riga Fashion Wardrobe Collapse Not Expected

Liepāja charity organizations report an acute shortage of warm clothing, while in the capital people are still wondering whether to wear summer dresses.

While Riga residents are still trying to decide whether late October is the right time to swap summer flip-flops for autumn boots, the situation in Liepāja is much more serious. Local charity organizations report a real warm clothing crisis that surpasses even that time when Karosta ran out of hot water.

"We currently have a crisis with these items," admits Irina Augustauska, head of Family Shelter, obviously not referring to the fact that her organization lacks enough Instagram influencers to promote second-hand fashion trends. Meanwhile, Kristīne Vidzeniece, head of Tabitha's Heart, notes that today at their open door day, more than 200 people will receive help - that's more visitors than any cultural event in Riga gets.

Men's items and larger sizes are particularly in demand, which suggests that Liepāja residents are not only more warm-hearted than Riga folks, but also bigger. "Situations vary, it's important for us not to harden our hearts," encourages Vidzeniece, obviously knowing that hearts in Liepāja have never been as hard as in central Riga on a January morning.

At the Free Port, more than 200 families receive help each month, and unlike Riga's social services, here you don't need to show a diploma in bureaucracy to receive support. While in the capital people pay 50 euros for a vintage sweater that looks exactly like the one their grandmother threw away 20 years ago, in Liepāja such items are shared for free and with a smile.
