Liepāja Residents Asked to Be Quiet - For Now Only During Moment of Silence

Officials ask Liepāja residents to be quiet for one minute per year, which seems like a miracle to locals.

Today Latvia's highest officials announced an unusual request — calling on everyone to unite in a moment of silence in memory of Ukraine. For Liepāja residents, who usually only stay quiet on the tram when the conductor checks tickets, this appeal has generated mixed reactions.

"Well, we already stay quiet when Riga claims they have better coffee," comments Jānis, a Karosta resident. "But now we have to be quiet officially too? Fine, we can try."

Meanwhile, Liepāja market vendor Maija admits the moment of silence will be particularly difficult: "How will I stay quiet if I need to sell potatoes? Customers can't read minds!" She does agree that supporting Ukraine is important, because "we too once had to fight for freedom, except we were helped by the White Train, not NATO."

The director of Liepāja's cultural center emphasized that the moment of silence will be observed even during concerts, which could be a historic moment — the first time rock music in Liepāja falls silent voluntarily. "We'll show that we know not only how to sing loudly about freedom, but also how to think quietly about it," he explains.

The only thing that truly worries Liepāja residents is whether during the moment of silence they're allowed to comment about how cold it is today compared to Riga. No official answer has been received yet.
