Liepāja Residents Offered Lessons on How to Drink Like the Dutch – Officially and for Money

The Interior Museum is organizing a workshop where for 17 euros they'll teach you to prepare historic alcoholic tonics that were once used for health purposes.

The Liepāja Interior Museum has come forward with a revolutionary idea – teaching Liepāja residents to drink with style and historical justification. At the "Dutch Health Elixirs" workshop for 17 euros, participants can master the art of preparing alcoholic tonics that the Dutch used in the 16th-18th centuries "for health and mood."

"Finally someone understood that our everyday drinking culture lacks an academic foundation," laughs local resident Jānis. "Now I can tell my wife I'm going to an educational event, not just to a bar."

The workshop leader Vaira Kārkliņa even has a doctorate in pedagogy, which means the process will be not only enjoyable but also scientifically grounded. Participants will learn how the Dutch once combined "local medicinal traditions with exotic ingredients," which is essentially an elegant way to describe the beginnings of cocktail culture.

Admittedly, the idea is brilliant – in Riga they'd charge at least 50 euros for such things and tell you it's an exclusive "wellness" experience. But in Liepāja everything is honest – for 17 euros you get knowledge, tasting, and the opportunity to take photos for social media.

The only problem – limited spots available, so you need to call 29905180. Recommendation: don't call after testing your own homemade "tincture."
