Liepāja Man Will Teach Norwegians How to Properly Serve Prison Time

A local entrepreneur who once killed his business partner and buried him together with an Audi will now demonstrate the art of serving prison sentences to Norwegians.

Norway's Correctional Services have received an unusual gift from Latvia - the opportunity to learn from a real Kurzeme professional on how to properly serve a murder sentence. Our local forestry expert M. Avižus, who in 2000 sent his business partner to eternal rest and then creatively buried him together with an Audi car, will now become a cultural ambassador in the Nordic countries.

According to Ministry of Justice representative Ilze Leimane, the process is "extensive and time-consuming," which in Liepāja context means it will happen faster than the tram repair work on Grīzupes Street. "The Norwegians are still evaluating whether our person has sufficient grounds to serve his sentence there," explains Leimane. Of course he does - where else will a Norwegian learn how to properly bury an Audi in a shed?

"It's like an export product," comments local trader Jānis. "We send to Norway not only fish and timber, but also experienced criminal rehabilitation specialists." Particularly interesting is that M. Avižus has been living in Norway for years, so he's like a ready-made product - familiar with local conditions, learned the language, and most likely already knows where the best prison cafeterias are.

Meanwhile in Riga, officials are still thinking about how to organize such international cooperation, but we in Liepāja are already a step ahead - our specialists work abroad, demonstrating the Latvian approach to problem-solving. Although this time the problem was a business partner, but well - business is business.
