Liepāja Resident Shocks Border Official with Revolutionary Silent Treatment Technique

Local tourist proves that English isn't mandatory if you can simply stand there and stare.

Another Liepāja patriot has created his own unique approach to international communication - simply not communicating at all. At a border control checkpoint, an English-speaking official asked the traditional question "How are you?" but received a response that would have inspired even our tram drivers with its profound depth of silence.

"At first I thought he was some kind of philosopher or meditation master," recounts the border guard. "But then I realized he simply didn't understand anything. It was like looking at our old Karosta barracks - beautiful, but completely incomprehensible."

When a guide explained the situation in Latvian, the tourist finally came to life. "I was surprised that someone was asking me something," he admits. "In Liepāja we're used to everyone knowing - if you're born by the sea, you don't need to explain how you're doing. You're doing fine, or you would have moved to Riga long ago."

Local residents consider this story a classic example of Liepāja practicality. "Why waste words when you can simply stand there? On our beach it works perfectly," laughs Karosta resident Maija. "Besides, what was he supposed to say - that today the wind is blowing from the southwest and rain threatens after lunch?"

Experts acknowledge that such an approach could become a new tourism trend - silent tourism. In Liepāja it's already a natural environment anyway, since between the tram rattling and sea splashing it's hard to have a conversation about anything.
