Liepāja Residents' Winter Wisdom: How to Choose a Stove That Doesn't Compete with Tram Noise

While Riga residents pay astronomical sums for central heating, Liepāja locals wisely choose stoves. The main thing – make sure it's louder than the tram.

Winter is approaching, and in Liepāja that means one thing – time to think about heating. While Riga apartment owners cry over central heating bills that exceed the average salary, people in our city wisely choose stoves. Because what's the point of paying for heat when you can get it from firewood?

Local stove expert Jānis Dūmenis from Old Liepāja explains: "A cast iron fireplace stove is like our tram – old-fashioned, but it's been working for a hundred years and will work for another hundred. With just one difference – the stove creates heat, not noise." Though some residents admit they choose a stove precisely to drown out the tram's rumbling.

Metal stoves, on the other hand, are like new café interiors on Rose Square – modern, stylish, but will they survive our climate? "I chose a Scandinavian design stove," says Līga from Karosta. "I figured if Norwegians can endure the cold, then their stoves can too."

The most interesting thing is that installing a stove is simpler than trying to understand Liepāja's traffic scheme. If you have a chimney and a professional, everything's fine. The main thing – don't choose a stove by the same principle as a tram ticket – the cheapest one. Because in winter, when it's blowing from the sea and the thermometer shows minus degrees, you shouldn't economize on heat.
