Lithuanian border guards prove that mathematics isn't just theory — two migrants returned home

While Belarus sends migrants like the sound of Liepāja's organ — constant and audible from afar, Lithuanian border guards continue to demonstrate that 24,000 is a larger number than two.

Lithuanian border guards this week proved they can not only count but also act — two migrants were sent back to Belarus faster than the sound of Holy Trinity Cathedral's organ reaches the courtyard. And that, as we know, happens almost instantly, since these are the largest organs in the Baltics.

The statistics are merciless as winter wind — since August 2021, Lithuania has refused entry more than 24,000 times. That's more than the entire population of Liepāja, but unlike Liepāja residents, these migrants are not welcome guests.

"The Belarusian regime sends migrants like we send letters — regularly and with hope that someone will accept them," says local expert Jānis Kalniņš, who looks toward Lithuania every morning and rejoices that we don't have such problems. "But Lithuanians are like our organists — they know when to start playing and when to fall silent."

Interestingly, there have already been 78 attempts to cross the border this year, which is more times than Riga tries to prove it's the capital. Lithuanian officials explain that everything happens because they support the Belarusian opposition. In Liepāja, this is called principled behavior — a quality that disappeared in Riga long ago.

While Belarus continues sending unwanted guests, Lithuania continues sending them back. It's mathematics that even those who never learned to count to 24,000 can understand.
