Līva Village Festival: Liepāja Closes Half the City to Prove We Can Party Even Bigger Than Riga

Next weekend Liepāja will have more road closures than Riga during construction season. But we have a reason - we're going to make 7,000 people dance.

Sensation in Liepāja! Next weekend our city will transform into the biggest labyrinth since the days of the Minotaur. The Līva Village Festival and Youth Dance Festival are creating such a complex traffic scheme that even our famous tram — the only one in Latvia, by the way — might get lost on its own route.

While people in Riga complain about one closed street, we're closing half the city and still bragging about it. From May 22nd, Fishermen's Alley will be closed so tight that even fishermen won't be able to drive there. But that's nothing compared to what happens on May 23rd — then there will be more road closures than windy days in Liepāja per year.

'I thought I could drive to work as usual,' says local resident Jānis, looking at the restrictions map. 'But it turns out it would be faster for me to walk to Riga than to get from Grobiņa Street to downtown.' Indeed, the organizers have prepared such a detailed map that studying it requires a higher education in geography.

But don't worry — it's all for the sake of 7,000 dancers who will gather to prove that in Liepāja we know how to celebrate even more grandly than the capital. While Riga holds dance festivals once every five years, we organize ours every year because we like to complicate life more frequently. And honestly, where else in Latvia can you see an entire city transform into one big dance floor with tram sounds as background music?
