LVC reveals: Roads in Kurzeme and Vidzeme becoming more slippery than Riga politicians' promises

While Riga is still searching for 33 technical units, in Liepāja we've long known that only good humor and proper winter tires help against ice.
Latvian State Roads announced this morning about icy road sections in Kurzeme and Vidzeme, which only brought smiles in Liepāja. While elsewhere people are surprised to discover that winter can be slippery, in our city such information is about as surprising as news that everything at the market is fresher than in Riga and half the price.
LVC has mobilized 33 winter equipment units, which is almost as many as Riga has committees deciding on snow removal. Local driver Juris Kalniņš comments: "Look, we in Liepāja don't need 33 machines - one Karosta veteran with a shovel standing by the bridge and waving when to drive more carefully is enough for us."
Particularly interesting is that LVC warns about gravel roads that are maintained in winter with a "packed snow layer." This technology has been known in Liepāja for years - we just call it "natural road surface," and it works just as effectively as the capital's road repairs.
Meanwhile, meteorologists have promised that temperatures will fluctuate above and below zero, creating potholes in the asphalt. In Liepāja, we receive such news as daily reality - our roads have been ready for any weather surprises since Soviet times, and potholes aren't a problem for us, but a nature-given navigation system.
