Madona defeats Liepāja in heat championship, but our beach remains freezing

While inland thermometers are bursting at +9.9 degrees, Liepāja beach stays faithful to its tradition — cold as a freezer compartment.

Specialists from the Latvian Meteorological Service celebrated another triumph today — the March 7th heat record was broken at three observation stations. Madona with its +9.9 degrees showed that it can be warm inland, but in Liepāja we just smiled through our windows.

While Priekuļi boasts +9.1 degrees and Zosēni +8.4 degrees, Liepāja beach remains faithful to its reputation — windy and cold even in summer, let alone early March. Local pensioner Voldemārs Kalniņš comments: "You see, boys, I'm 73 years old, and I remember that our Baltic Sea has never been warm. Even in July people run out of the water like they've been scalded."

Interestingly, last year on March 7th it was +14.1 degrees in Dobele — that's the national record. But for us in Liepāja such readings are only theoretically possible, because our city is located in a strategically important place where Baltic Sea winds maintain the natural order. It's not for nothing that tourists go to Jūrmala in summer instead of coming to swim with us.

Last year Latvia broke 396 heat records, but only nine cold records. In Liepāja such statistics only cause wonder — in our city every other December is a potential cold record, but nobody writes about it because here that's normal.
