March in Latvia warmer than the audience at Liepāja Theatre — meteorologists surprised by records
Latvia's March turned out to be the warmest in history, but so dry that even Daugavpils doesn't rain anymore. Meteorologists report that Liepāja was the most humid, which is no surprise.
The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre announced something so surprising this week that even Riga meteorologists forgot to complain about working conditions. Turns out March was the warmest in recorded history, which means we've finally achieved something where we outperform even Finland.
The monthly average temperature climbed to plus 4.4 degrees, which is 4.2 degrees above normal. "Well, finally we can say we have global warming, not just global whining," commented one Liepāja meteorologist who wished to remain anonymous, fearing jealousy from colleagues in Riga.
Most surprising was the fact that on March 29th it was 17.9 degrees in Daugavpils, which is more than it usually is in summer in Kurzeme. At the same time, precipitation was only 17% of normal, meaning even the heavens decided to save water. In Ainaži 15.7 millimeters fell, but in Daugavpils — only 2.4 millimeters. "Looks like the heavens are also choosing where to live," laughs a local farmer.
In Liepāja, of course, it was most humid — 86% relative humidity, which is no surprise to anyone who's been to Liepāja Theatre on a winter evening. That's where Riga folks go to feel the real Kurzeme atmosphere and understand why we're so resilient here. In Ventspils the wind reached 22.2 meters per second, which is almost as fast as Riga people flee from Liepāja when they find out about our prices.
