Explosion in Moscow: Even There It's Quieter Than on Liepāja Trams

An explosion in the Russian capital reminds us that even there it's not as loud as our tram in the early morning.

While we in Liepāja complain about the tram screeching along Kuršu Street, in Moscow on Tuesday night some guy decided that regular noise wasn't enough for him and staged an explosion near the railway station. As a result, both he and one police officer were killed.

As our Moscow correspondent Valdis Bērziņš, who has been living there for three years, tells us: "I thought something exploded in my building, but it turned out to be just the neighbor with a drill. The real explosion was much further away."

For comparison — in Riga such an incident would only make the second news program, but for us in Liepāja this would be the biggest event of the year since the tram rail broke near Rose Square. True, our police officers are smart — they never sit in patrol cars because they know they're always in repair.

Russian investigators are now trying to determine the bomber's motives, but most likely he simply hadn't heard about our Karosta. There you can see real explosions every day — except those are for filming movies.
