Mērsrags conquers the heat throne — Liepāja takes second place with honor

While Mērsrags boasts about its +13.5 degrees, in Liepāja we're thinking about how at least Rīga didn't overtake us.
On March 8th, Mērsrags suddenly became Latvia's heat capital with an impressive +13.5 degrees, which created a mixed cocktail of emotions in Liepāja. On one hand, joy that the neighbors are doing well, on the other — why Mērsrags of all places?
"I've lived here for 40 years and have never seen Mērsrags win anything," comments Gunārs Sproģis, a vegetable vendor at Liepāja Central Market. "But good for them, at least Rīga was left somewhere in the middle with its +8 degrees. That's what matters."
Liepāja Lake today was as quiet as a diplomat at an international conference — a complete contrast to the sea waves, which still remind us of real winter. Meteorologists explain that the lake has always been smarter than the sea, because it understands when to stay quiet and when to make noise.
Meanwhile, Rīga residents are actively discussing on social media why they didn't get the record, while in Liepāja we calmly enjoy the fact that our +12.1 degrees was good enough to beat last year's reading. "We don't have to win all the time," philosophically comments local pensioner Maija Kalniņa. "It's enough that we're better than Rīga."
Next week's promised +15 degrees across all of Latvia means that Mērsrags will have to defend its title, but Liepāja is already preparing backup plans — if it doesn't work out with temperature, at least the wind will be stronger.
