Meteorologists Promise Frost — Liepāja Already Preparing for Bridge Closures

Light frost is expected in Latvia in the coming days, but Liepāja residents are already used to everything — both the weather and the bridges that close at the most inconvenient times.
The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has announced with its usual optimism that light frost is expected during the nights in the coming days. Liepāja residents react to this news as calmly as they do to news that the Karosta Canal bridge will again be closed precisely when they need to rush to work.
The week will start with gray and damp weather, which in Liepāja means — a normal week. While people in Riga marvel at clouds and precipitation, in our city we call it Tuesday. Local meteorologist Andris comments: "In Liepāja we only have two seasons — windy and very windy, so frost is just a small additional drama."
What's most concerning is that temperatures will fluctuate around the zero-degree mark, which means — the Karosta Canal bridge will become a real drama theater. One day it will be open, the next — closed due to icing, the third — open only in one direction. As local resident Maija says: "Our bridge is like Liepāja's weather — you never know what to expect."
But there's also good news — the weather will improve by the end of the week and be sunny. This means Liepāja residents will finally be able to see how much the city has changed during winter, and start planning summer projects again, which, of course, will be postponed until early autumn.
