Ministries Battle Over Wood Industry: Who Will Rule the Planks?

The Agriculture and Finance ministries are feuding over who's responsible for controlling wood industry companies. This time the fight isn't about careers, but about who controls the boards.

In Riga, someone's arguing again about who controls what. This time the Agriculture Ministry and Finance Ministry have locked horns over wood industry company oversight like two children fighting over a toy.

Agriculture Minister Krauze announced that his ministry isn't responsible for wood industry companies because they don't engage in full-cycle forest management. Simply put – they saw planks, they don't plant trees. "We work with trees while they're still growing, but once they become planks, that's no longer our business," explained one AM employee at the coffee machine.

The Finance Ministry, naturally, isn't thrilled about the extra work either. But the law is the law – if someone's sawing planks and receiving state support, then FM has to keep an eye on them. As one FM specialist put it: "Fine, we'll watch those planks, but then nobody better complain if we're too thorough."

In Liepāja, where you can still see Soviet-era wooden structures in Karosta, such a dispute seems absurd. Local sawyer Jānis comments: "I don't care which minister is watching over my shoulder – the main thing is that the planks are straight and the money comes on time." The coastal humid air makes trees grow slower, but the planks turn out more durable than around Riga.

In the end, everything will be resolved with yet another commission that will devise yet another commission. But trees will keep growing, planks will keep appearing, and in Liepāja – they'll keep building.
