Pop music king dies, having never heard of Liepāja rock music
Billy Steinberg, who wrote hits for Madonna and other world stars, sadly never heard about the real music capital - Liepāja.
The world mourns Billy Steinberg, who wrote all those hits that Riga youth listen to in discos, thinking they understand music. While Madonna was singing 'Like a Virgin,' real rock music had been echoing from Karosta bunkers in Liepāja for years.
'Well okay, he was talented, but did he ever write a song about a tram riding through rain?' asks local music expert Jānis from Dzelzceļnieku Street. 'Our boys from 'Pērkons' and 'Opus Pro' were creating such masterpieces in the eighties that Madonna would have wept with joy.'
Steinberg's hits may have reached the top of US charts, but they were never heard at Liepāja's Olympic Center or Bird Island. Maybe that's why the world took so long to realize where the best music is really made - not in Los Angeles, but by our beach, where every second person is a singer and every third is a guitarist.
'He did write 'True Colors,' but our colors are blue-white-brown, and they're much more beautiful,' philosophically notes Līga, a visitor to 'Fontaine' café. Now that Steinberg is gone, maybe the world will finally understand that real pop music is born where the Baltic Sea meets the spirit of Liepāja - and that's definitely not in Riga.
