Dutch police are investigating a fire at a Rotterdam synagogue with their usual diligence, which turned out to be as brief as a Liepāja resident's patience waiting in line for the tram. The fire burned for a short while and then extinguished itself, which is about as surprising as the fact that it's windy in Liepāja.
Police now have to investigate what happened at 3:40 AM local time, when all normal people are sleeping. A video recording of an explosion has spread on social media, which, of course, immediately went viral. These days you can't even drink coffee or put out a fire without video footage.
Rotterdam mayor Carola Schouten firmly announced that there is no place for antisemitism and violence in the city. This announcement has caused great concern in the Jewish community, which is understandable. In Liepāja we would solve such problems at the Olympic Center — on the basketball court all conflicts can be resolved civilly, with a ball in hand and sporting spirit in the heart.
In Belgium on Monday, a similar incident occurred in Liège, where Islamists claimed responsibility in a video recording. Apparently nowadays even terrorist acts aren't complete without a social media strategy and content marketing plan. As my neighbor Gunārs said: 'In the old days people simply worked their job and went home, but now everyone has to be an influencer.'
