NMPD specialists have become meteorologists: six to seven calls daily for frozen Liepāja residents

"Well, what's there to wonder about," philosophically admits local Gunārs, who for the third week straight hasn't stopped wearing three jackets simultaneously. "In Liepāja, winter is like a permanent job — reliable and with a stable schedule. Not like Riga, where today it's minus five, tomorrow plus three, and everyone walks around confused."
VTMEC data reveals that this year until January 30th, 12 deaths related to body hypothermia have been registered. Seven of them — outdoors, which proves that our city is particularly creative in winter entertainment. Alcohol presence was detected in four cases, meaning that in eight cases people were sober enough to understand — it's cold outside, but went out anyway.
"Liepāja residents have a special relationship with cold," explains local animal care center employee Maija. "We're like penguins — we know it's cold, but still go outside. We just don't have such beautiful feathers." NMPD reminds — if you see a person sleeping on a bench longer than necessary for an Instagram photo, approach and check.
