Ornithologists Reveal: Bird Houses Just as Dangerous as Liepāja Port in Season

While fishermen at Liepāja port sell fish with straight faces that are "freshly caught" for the fourth day running, Latvian Ornithological Society expert Agnis Bušs has discovered another specialty of Latvian merchants – bird houses that are just as dangerous to birds as old fish is to humans.

"Retail outlets sell bird houses with perches that allow larger birds to access the smaller ones," explains Bušs. It's like putting entrance steps at a bank vault – technically possible, but not intended for everyone. In Riga, of course, they're still thinking about whether bird houses are even needed, but in Liepāja we've long known – if something doesn't work, it was probably made elsewhere.

Special attention should be paid to the cage floor, which must be nailed between the walls. Otherwise it can fall out during nesting season, which is almost as traumatic as seeing your favorite restaurant in Liepāja close for the winter season. "Slippery cage walls are like slippery streets in Riga – they look normal, but the result is catastrophic," adds one local gardener who wished to remain anonymous.

Ornithologists recommend placing bird houses in safe locations, for example, against a shed wall, making sure there are no convenient access points for predators nearby. It's like looking for a parking spot in downtown Liepāja in summer – technically possible, but requires strategic thinking and luck.
