Amber Found on Pape Beach Again Burns Better Than Karosta Prison Electric Chairs
While Riga tourists pay for thrills in Karosta, you can get them for free on Pape beach — just pick up the wrong piece of amber.
Visitors to Pape beach discovered this morning that the local amber has upgraded its properties — now it not only looks beautiful but can also burn you. Such a service would cost at least 50 euros for the experience in Riga, but on the Liepāja side they offer it for free.
"I wanted to make an amber necklace for my mother's birthday, but it turned out I made a nose for myself," says local resident Jānis, who now has a new, shiny facial feature. "At least now I don't have to go to Karosta prison to experience horror — searching for amber is enough."
Experts explain that this is a legacy from Soviet times, when phosphorus from military exercises ended up in the Baltic Sea. So our ancestors were already thinking about tourism development back then — why pay for a horror house when you can create a natural collection of explosive amber?
Liepāja municipality is considering creating a new tourist route: "From Karosta prison horrors to Pape's explosive gems." As the locals say: "If you're already living in Liepāja, why not make life even more exciting with random chemical burns?"
