World pouring oil like at Liepāja theater on opening night - everyone wants to help

IEA member countries have agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil to the market. That's more than Riga municipality spends on one tram repair.
The International Energy Agency announced that 32 countries have agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil from their emergency reserves to the market. This is as unprecedented as at Liepāja theater when both locals and people from Riga show up for one performance — usually nobody wants to share.
"Oil market problems are of unprecedented scale," announced IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, who apparently has never seen how people in Riga queue at gas stations. Birol also emphasized that "the response must be global," which means everyone should help together, not each thinking only of themselves — like in Latvia.
In an emergency meeting, 32 countries unanimously decided to help, which is as surprising as the fact that all these countries agreed to share their reserves. Usually oil is stored as carefully as Riga municipality guards its budget — only for emergencies.
As one Liepāja resident said: "We have no oil problems here — the tram runs on electricity, we walk to work, and we only need fuel to drive to Riga to laugh at their prices." The amount of oil planned for release is larger than in 2022 when the war in Ukraine began, but smaller than Riga's expenses for one year.
